"Back in the old days", this is how it was done. Both of my grandmothers had Singer sewing machines. No one had money to throw anything away. You sewed on the button, let out the seam, took up the hem, or whatever you had to in order to get more wear out of the item.

I can remember when iron-on patches became a thing. I was taught how to hand sew holes in socks. Now it's a lost art. :-(
