Both sets of grandparents were very much against "receiving charity". Both Mom-moms had a garden and either can or freeze everything she could. My maternal Pop-pop would go hunting with my uncles. They shot what they needed to feed the family and no more. They kept an extra freezer in the walk-in pantry. My paternal pop-pop raised hogs and chickens and got their meat sources from that.

This was all happening as I was growing up in the 70s so it wasn't all that long ago. As a society we have gotten lazy. Disposable cameras led to all photos being digital. Harvesting and preparing potatoes for a mashed side has long been replaced with powder in an envelope. Stoves and ovens have been replaced with microwaves and induction ovens, etc.

As Covid continues more and more people are going to "float to the top" because they never learned to swim.
