During the signup phase Medium should have a bunch of required fields. You should have to validate your account by validating your email. There should be a "writer", "reader" and "writer/reader" field that is also required. You can always change it later if you decide to switch up. If you select "reader" everyone should get the same default bio of "I'm just here to read the great stories!"
