Back in biblical times there was no filing paperwork with the government and paying the applicable fees, nor having a formal ceremony, and then filing more paperwork and more fees. That's more man-made caca.

Exodus 22:16

“And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.”

Have sex = married. That was it. Nowadays it's a multi-million dollar business and just like student loans, the only people going broke are the participants. Everyone else is making bank.
