I don't know if htey have this where you are but here the hospital has "financial assistance" as in they receive donations and grants to cover medical bills for those who can't pay the high cost of healthcare in this country.

When mom got cancer the first time I got the paperwork and filled it out for her. She never saw a bill. I know when I got deathly ill years back my 3 week stay was either 30k or 40k+. A social worked applied for me and I too never saw a bill.

It could't hurt to ask. You just never know.
