I hope you didn't pay for that tidbit of wisdom. No, not everyone can make it as a "writer". Writing your mom's grocery list out for her doesn't make you a writer. Being well-read, educated (at least to some degree), sociable, marketable, etc. is what makes you a successful writer.

The days of signing with a publishing house and going out on book tours is long gone.
