I was an editor for a pub that "requested" that we clap 50x for each piece we published.

Publications often build into their submission guidelines a request to comment on other pieces — in the name of community. That works if the other articles speak to me. But if they don’t because you’re publishing a wide range of styles (and that’s a good thing), then forcing pat responses doesn’t community make.
