I'm the "worst" kind of friend. I'm an asshole and all of my friends know it. And by a-hole I mean if you ask me a question I'm giving you the answer.

I'd insist on meeting him for lunch, just the two of you. Have your guard down but your radar on full blast. Read him-what he says, how he says it, how he conducts himself, if he pulls out your chair (he should be considerate to his love's friends, right), etc.

Grill him. Ask him all the questions that need to be asked. Watch him as he answers. Does he hesitate? Does something he tells you not match up with what he told your friend? Watch his body language. Does he squirm? Make eye contact?

Yeah, I'm not the PI you want to hire because I will find out the truth regardless if people like the truth or not. I don't let many people get close to me so the few that do?

I'll bury you in the backyard and take my chances in court if you screw them over.
