Not all that long ago, I read a piece by Susan Foster about the difficulties she encountered while looking for publications to submit to. I commented on her piece but wanted to elaborate here. These are the things that I look for, and why, when choosing a publisher.

Number of editors vs number of writers

Why is this important? A few things come to mind. If you see one editor and 16,872,265,426,549,987 writers listed, then common sense would tell you that these numbers are way out of whack. Either the writers are listed and not producing (which for me, if you don’t submit at least one piece every 30 days I toss your butt)…

Or the writers really are writing and submitting, which will probably lead to LONG wait times before your piece is processed, and either published or rejected. Why would an editor not bring on other editors? Control issues.

How many days are there in between publishings?

If they publish once every 7–10 days, I’m going to pass. No writer earns money, followers, claps, or comments by sitting in someone’s queue for a week.
