Migraines

They won’t kill you. You’ll just wish they did.

When I hit my 20s, it appeared I kept a migraine. Migraines typically last for a few days, tops. I had one that clocked in for 28-days straight. Yes. You read that correctly. In excruciating head pain for nearly a month.

I have very few memories of that time period. I was on so much pain medication that I spent most of my life knocked out. Even the light from the refrigerator when I opened it to get something to drink would be enough to set my head off. I can remember falling out of bed and crawling across the floor to the ensuite so I could puke. I was so weak from not eating that I’d either crawl back to the bed and pull myself up in it or, on at least one occasion, I fell asleep on the bathroom floor. My then-husband found me when he got home from work that night.

I was eventually sent to Doctor’s Hospital in Greenbelt, Maryland. They wanted to do a brain scan with contrast. All other attempts at diagnosing me and trying to alleviate my pain had failed. Now they were suspecting a brain tumor.

On the tube, slide into place, injection with the contrast given, I was also strapped down to make sure I didn’t budge a fraction while they filmed. The doctor left the room so the tech could begin. She noticed through the…
