Large publications make you wait days/weeks to get a rejection or a publication. Large high volume publications bury your piece in their daily avalanche.

Medium/Small publications - you may or may not get seen depending on the size of their followers. The ones that I've dealt with do not hide the fact that they will put no more effort into publishing your piece other than hitting Publish. So mistakes and all are no live for the world to see.

You may as well self-publish once you've hit the 500-1000 followers with an occasional publication submission.
