State run mental health hospitals were closed, I believe it was the 80s, to save money. We now see how well that worked out. Every time I see an abandoned school, office building, or mall, I can't help but think that each classroom, office, store front would be about the right size for an efficiency apartment. Electrical and plumbing already installed.
The cost of the "catch and release" of the mentally ill/homeless would more than cover the cost I'm sure.
But Joe & JoAnne Citizen claims they want the homeless off the street. They just don't want them in buildings in their backyard.
Then as you said, the millions and billions spent on useless crap. It makes me mad when people will fork out $$$$ to take a space ride for 10 mins but wouldn't think of donating that money to building and staffing a homeless shelter.
Stop the world. I want off.
