The notion of NOT being self-sufficient is foreign to me. I grew up on a 5-acre farm in southern DE in the 70s. With three daughters and no sons I was Dad's token boy. I drove a tractor before I was old enough to drive a car.
Mom had me stand up in a kitchen chair to reach the sink so I could wash dinner dishes.
We were taught law care, car care, how to grow a garden, etc. b/c we lived in the middle of nowhere so if we didn't do it then it didn't get done.
Oh, and we raised 10s of 1000s of chickens for Perdue too. And if we had the nerve to have our work done there we got pimped out to aunts, uncles, and grandparents who needed help.
When I got my first paying job Dad drove to the nearest bank and opened a checking account for me. Then he taught me how to write a check, read a bank statement, and balance it too.
Before cars got so complicated I went to an auto parts store and taught myself who to read a parts book. Then I pulled the various filters and took them up to the counter. The guy checked in the computer behind me to make sure I had the right stuff. I did. Of course. I'm not an idiot and I know how to read but if the Man had to make sure the Little Lady was doing right... so be it.
Then I would proceed to change my own oil, gas, and air filters. I learned how to do a radiator flush. Then I went to a shop and asked some guys how to touch up the trim paint. They taught me, I got the stuff, and went home and did it.
That's why I'm always shocked by females like this one that can't seem to do anything for herself and were about the same age!
