The world at large can't understand why so many Americans don't have passports. Why should we? This country is huge and each of the 50 states is like visiting a different country. As you said the food, music, culture, all of it is greatly different.

I spent about 27 years in the mid-Atlantic region. That's the strip between DC and NY basically. High energy, high intensity, work-hard-play-hard mentality. Then I get on Medium with that in my blood and manage to piss people off all over the world.

And I'm okay with that. :-)
