What is a Kicker?

What a Kicker isn’t!

What is a Kicker?

As gravity well (Rob Tomlin) said over on Feedium recently,

I use it to classify the types of stories I write. For example: “Getting Started”, “Freelancing Tips”, “Financial Advice”, etc.

In other words, almost like the tags, you use before submitting a story. Then there’s Casey Botticello take on Kickers.

A kicker is a short phrase that precedes the title of the article. Kickers can be used as hooks or to further explain titles and they can be used to present a section or classification of content.

Another way to think of it is it’s like a filing system. You have files at home: mortgage, car payments, insurance, taxes, etc. Those would be Kickers.

Should you use a Kicker?

It’s completely optional. No publication that I’m aware of requires it. They’re easy to create if run across one. I posed the question to Medium’s own Casey Botticello. Either my question got lost in his notifications or his response…
