I don't know. I like helping people first and foremost. I didn't realize that I had helped so many newbies until I saw the outpouring on Maverick's piece. A lot of commenters said I had really helped them to become better writers. Yet here I thought I was just a monkey on an organ grinder - cranking them out day in and day out and not making much of a difference.

Finding Medium when I did gave me a purpose. Up until then I had been in a funk. I had to medically retire at 55. Up to that point I had been working 40+ hours a week and squeezing in volunteer work to boot.

Then it all came to a screeching halt. Writing on Medium gave me a voice. Functioning as an editor gave a reason.
