Why Writers MUST Interview Publications

5 things to look for when trying to find a home on Medium

Some time ago I read about the difficulties one writer encountered while looking for publications to submit to. I commented on the piece but wanted to be able to go deeper and elaborate so I’ve written this piece.

Writers and publishers honestly get things twisted up. It isn’t a one-sided relationship unless you the writer allow it to be. The publications are being (or should be!) interviewed by you as much as you are by them. I know. Mind blowing concept.

These are the things that I look for, and why, when choosing a publisher.

1. Number of editors vs number of writers

Why is this important? A few things come to mind. If you see one editor and 416,872,426,987 writers listed, then common sense will tell you that these numbers are way out of balance. Either the writers are listed and not producing (which for me, if you don’t submit at least one piece every 30 days I toss your butt) or the writers really are writing and submitting. That will lead to a LONG wait time before your piece is processed, and then either published or rejected. You may not even get a rejection note as they will be no doubt too busy to tell you why they hit the reject button.
